Village Board of Trustee Meetings will be available beginning February 11, 2013 via webcast on this site. The webcast can be viewed from the Government of the Public Access TV pages of this site.
Mandates are commonly used to shift tax burden from state government to the local municipality and ultimately to the local taxpayer. The Village of Fairport opposes the use of mandates to balance the state budget deficit. Monroe County Tree and 2013 Conservation Tree and Shrub Program
Although winter is almost here, it’s not too early to start looking ahead towards spring, and a great place to start is with the Monroe County Soil & Water Conservation District’s 2013 Conservation Tree & Shrub program! The District will hold their annual sale of bare root seedlings and transplants at the Monroe County ecopark facility this spring!
People have an opportunity to pre-order more than 60 different species of bare-root conifers, hardwood trees, shrubs, wildflowers, and groundcovers, as well as seed mixes and other products used in conservation projects. Packages range in unit size and price, from a bundle of 10 plants for as low as $11, to bundles of 100 plants for an average cost of $83. Some of the new species this year include: Pawpaw, American Beech, Shagbark Hickory, Eastern Redbud and Wintergreen. We’ve also updated our selection of multi-packs where homeowners can choose from 10 pre-packaged plant combinations that help accommodate the suburban homeowner’s conservation needs. Rather than getting a single pack of ten trees/shrubs composed of only one species, the multi-packs offer two plants of five different species; perfect for the suburban conservationist! By offering planting materials in several groups, the program is set up to meet the needs of all county landowners, whether they have a small lot or hundreds of acres.
New this year is the Riparian Conservation Pack, perfect for vegetating area next to streams, ponds, lakes or wet areas. As always, species adapted to Monroe County site conditions have been selected to provide a variety of conservation uses.
"Planting trees and shrubs is perhaps the most effective way for individuals to help keep our environment clean and green," said District Director Kelly Emerick. "In addition to providing shade, privacy, wildlife habitat, borders, windbreaks and snow fences, trees provide many environmental benefits not visible to the eye." She explained, "They work as filters to help protect drinking water, clean the air of pollutants, stabilize soil to prevent erosion, and reduce noise by acting as sound barriers. Trees can help cool your home in the summer, and break cold winds in the winter, helping to reduce energy use. They can even add value to your property."
All plants are bare-root stock making them much easier to transport and plant. The Conservation Tree and Shrub Program is a pre-order program and the deadline for ordering is March 8 th, 2013. We have a limited availability of plant stock, so to ensure we can meet your needs we encourage pre-ordering!
Those interested in the Conservation Tree and Shrub program can find the order form attached to this news release. Order forms can also be found at District website: www.monroecountyswcd.org or at any Town/Village Clerk’s Office in Monroe County. You may also contact the County Soil and Water Conservation District at (585) 473-2120 x3, M-F from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm to have the order form faxed, mailed, or emailed to you.
The Monroe County Soil and Water District reported that last year, over 535 residents planted over 28,000 native trees and shrubs across the county!!! This year the Soil and Water District expects to green up Monroe County even more.
